About this Page
Principal Gentz from Twin City Elementary, where my youngest son attends, asked me to participate in their “Wednesday Group” program and teach some kids about music, so I happily agreed. I was a bit late, though, so my apologies to the first group! We learned some sound and music fundamentals and each group made a recording or two and I promised them I would put them online, so … here they are!

What did we learn?
We started with talking about Sound. What is sound? Vibrating Air! How do we hear? Our ear drums are connected with tiny bones to our cochlea, a snail shaped organ in our inner ear with little tiny hairs! Humans can hear air vibrating between 20 and 20,000 times per second!
Noise is random sound. Music is ORGANIZED sound!
How do we organize sounds to make music? Three primary ways:
1) When we make a sound (Rhythm)
2) Which sound we make (Melody/Harmony)
3) How loud we make the sound (Dynamics)
We went on to practice these concepts, first with just our hands and feet, choosing a rhythmic pattern and choosing our notes (clapping or stomping) and then I conducted the Dynamics from nothing, to very quietly, to loud to crazy loud!
For two of the older groups (group 4 and 5) we even got to record this performance. Then we used instruments to try to make our own beginner musical recording. It was a lot of fun, and we are beginners, so sometimes it was more noisy (less organized) but we are on our way towards more musical sounds (=more organized). It’s just going to take some practice!
