-learning to play from nashville number charts is an excellent helpful skill to learn.  It’s not the standard in Nashville for no reason

-it’s a great way to help you understand theory better

-it helps you to learn to play in any key

-it’s another step in learning to MEMORIZE your music so you don’t need any on the platform.

I am moving more and more towards challenging my team to memorize their songs.  On the platform I want them prepared well enough to be able to really free up their brain to listen to one another and to really engage with God and the congregation.  Nothing like having your music memorized to help you get there.

And there’s nothing like understanding Nashville number system to help you memorize the simple patterns in our music.

Many times nashville numbers charts are actually clearer than trying to place chord letters up above the right word in the right spot.  You can see the pattens much more clearly.

He’s only been at that church for a few years but was at Overlake Christian Church for decades before that.  I really look up to Dave because he has been ministering so faithfully on the cutting edge for so long.  He is big into networking like me and training up the next generation and has an internship program too, like me!  His kids love the Lord and are following after Jesus and one even goes to church with him and his Mom goes there too!  What an amazing witness for the Lord!

Lessons I learned from my conversation with Dave:

In the long run we are more productive with rest, so make sure and take time to rest.

He always tells his musicians: We want your spouse to be glad you are on the worship team! I feel guilty asking some of my older players with families to serve because I know this puts extra pressure on an already full life. I do know that the creative outlet can be a significant part of a balanced spiritual diet too though.  Maybe I’ve done them a disservice over the years by not asking them to serve.  What a great way to phrase my requests.  I’m going to unabashedly steal this one Dave!

Try to only do what only you can do.  There are lots of people that want to help and you are denying them the opportunity to serve if you do what they are called to do and you will burn out.

Surround yourself with young people to keep you young and on the cutting edge.

Stay in touch with the people.  At his church there is always a pastor on call and they also each take 1 counseling appointment per week and are pastors first and tradespeople second.

Memorize your music, including words.  It is so freeing and people really notice the engagement difference.  Watch out my worship team.  The bar is about to be raised.  You are about to have to start memorizing your music.  I’ve been considering this step for a long while now. Jared Anderson told me the same thing at lunch a few years back.  This is just another confirmation.  Between that and playing with a click, those are 2 of the biggest musical bars you can raise.  So watch out!  Here it comes!!!

I’m sure there are more lessons that I picked up, but these are the main ones that come to the top of my head right now.  I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to spend time with Dave and then his admin and his intern Adam Gerty.  I learned great stuff from them as well, but don’t have time to blog about it all.

How do our ears work?

When we are organizing our sounds, what are 3 big questions we can ask:

1. WHEN did the sound happen?  =>Rhythm               (Play in TIME)
2. WHAT sound/note did we hear or make? =>Pitch    (Play in TUNE)
3. HOW LOUD was the sound? =>Dynamics               (Play at the right Volume)
